Bionomic Comparison of Polistes biglumis (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) at Two Different Localities in Hokkaido, Northern Japan, with Reference to its Probable Adaptation to Cold Climate

The life cycle of Polistes biglumis (L.) was observed at two climatically different localities (Oketo and Sapporo) in Hokkaido, northern Japan, during 1969-1970, and some probably adaptive features at the boreal limit of polistine distribution were tentatively mentioned. The two life cycles are essentially the same in the fair presence of matrifilial organization, though the life mode is somewhat influenced by climatic conditions. The life cycle in Oketo might nearly represent the cycle which would be shown at the northernmost distribution, suggesting that the atavism to complete solitary life should not be expected in this firmly fixed eusocial group even at the boreal limit of distribution. An associated structure of extremely elongate and peripherally vacant cells is called a functional envelope for its probable adaptive function in ameliorating the relative independence of intracellular microclimate under adverse thermal condition.
