The mating behavior of the Japanese cockroach, Periplaneta japonica Karny, was observed. The male raises his tegmina and wings as reported before for several cockroaches and the female mounts and licks his back. The male perceives the female from a distance and is excited by the sex stimulant emanated from the female. The substance was extracted with methylene chloride from the filter papers on which female cockroaches were housed. Only the neutral fraction showed to cause sexual excitement to males at 10^<-2>μg level.
