The Japanese species of the family Sciomyzidae are revised. Twenty-three species of 11 genera are recognized in Japan. Three species, Pherbellia tricolor, Dichetophora japonica, and D. kumadori, are described as new to science. Five Palaearctic species (Colobaea eos Rozkosny & Elberg, Ditaeniella grisescens (Meigen), Pherbellia ditoma Steyskal, Pherbellia schoenherri schoenherri (Fallen), and Tetanura pallidiventris Fallen) and the Holarctic Pherbellia griseola (Fallen) are newly recorded from Japan. Japanese records of Pherbellia dubia (Fallen) and an unidentified species of Sepedon Latreille by Yano (1978) known are not confirmed in this study. All species distributions are mapped and a key to Japanese species is provided. Two local allopatric forms are recognized in both Limnia japonica Yano and Dichetophora japonica.
