The wing polymorphism and egg diapause of the oriental chinch bug, Cavelerius saccharivorus, are reviewed from the viewpoint of seasonal adaptations in subtropical regions. Although the incidence of macroptery in this bug is density dependent, it is also strongly increased by seasonal factors such as long daylength and high temperature. As a result, macropters are produced most abundantly from late summer to early autumn. These macropters disperse actively to more favorable habitats such as summer-planted sugar-cane fields, where they lay diapause eggs from autumn to mid-winter. The diapause eggs of this bug, especially those laid by brachypters, tend to respond opportunistically to high temperatures above 25℃ by terminating their diapause. Diapause intensity also varies widely between and within clutches. It is concluded that wing polymorphism of adults and the large variation in diapause intensity of eggs are bet-hedging tactics which, together with the opportunism, constitute adaptations to subtropical winter seasons, where the benefit of egg diapause varies irregularly from year to year.
