Diapause Termination in two Geographic Strains of Chymomyza costata (Diptera : Drosophilidae)

Diapause termination was studied in Japanese and Finnish strains of Chymomyza costata which enters larval diapause in autumn. Laboratory experiments suggested that low temperatures (-5 to 3℃) terminated diapause and a temperature of 0℃ was the most effective. A period of low-temperature exposure required to terminate diapause was 2-3 months. Continuous illumination (LL) did not terminate diapause when applied without cold-treatment, but was more effective to terminate diapause than a short daylength (11 h light : 13 h dark) when applied after cold treatment. Under outdoor conditions, diapause of this species ended by mid winter. Japanese and Finnish strains had similar diapause-terminating processes except for the response to continuous illumination after cold treatment. No difference was observed in cold tolerance between these two strains.
