The contents of intracytoplasmic cortical granules in mouse ova were not stained with tannic acid, whereas those ejected into the perivitelline space after fertilization were strongly stained, suggesting that certain chemical modifications may occur in the cortical granule materials when they are released into the perivitelline space.
