Calcium-free sea water or inhibitors of DNA synthesis induced the monsters with separated embryonic areas in the horseshoe crab. Brains of these monsters were often separated from nerve cords. In some of these monsters, the position of the brain was extremely abnormal. The results brought the following presumptions. The nervous cells or the mesodermal tissue which induces the nervous system are determined at the stage of occurence of separation (gastrula stage). The ganglion of each segment is independently formed after this stage. The position of the brain does not determine the route of elongation of the stomodaeum. The crossing between the nervous system and the alimentary canal is not necessary for development and existence of the Protostomia horseshoe crabs.
