• According to the previous investigations (Takata, '59a and '59b) there were some differences in the tendencies of food preference among the common cabbage butterfly larvae from different localities. From these results it was assumed that the difference in the degree of cultivation of the host plants is one of the main causes inducing the variation of food preference of the common cabbge butterfly larvae. In this paper the author wishes to demonstrate the above points from another viewpoint. Namely, the tendencies of food preference of the larvae which developed in the field of Nasturium indicum DC. (Japanese name "inugarashi") or reared with Chinese cabbage are examined. It is a rare case that both the host plants are attacked by the butterfly at Sasayama district. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) The larvae which have developed on Chinese cabbage or inugarashi show no conspicuous tendency in preference between cabbage leaves or radish leaves and their host plants leaves, but there seems to be a slight tendency that the larvae prefer the leaves fed at the larval stage. Whereas, the larvae which have grown with cabbage prefer decidedly cabbage leaves to Chinese cabbage leaves or inugarashi leaves. 2) The same tendency of food preferenceshown by the common cabbage butterfly larvae which had developed in the pak-choi field (Takata, '59) was observed aso in the present experiment. In some point, however, the result was different. In the present case, the larvae developed with Chinesecabbege or inugarashi prefer their host plants leaves to cabbage or radish leaves slightly, but in the previous experiment the larvae which developedin the pak-choi field showed no preference between pak-choi leaves and cabbage leaves or radish leaves. 3) These results seem to suggest that there are some factors inducing the behavior of preference and the extent of cultivation of the host plants in space and season is surely the main factor concerned, but unknown other factors will also be partaken in.
