• According to previous investigations (Takata, '56, '57a, b) the common cabbage butterfly larvae which developed in the cabbage field preferred decidedly cabbage leaves to radish leaves, and on the other hand, the lavae which grew in the radish field tended to prefer radish leaves to cabbage leaves. The preference behavior in the former was more conspicuous than in the latter. It is highly probable that the food preference is affected by the extent of cultivation with the host plants. Cabbage is cultivated most intermediately between these two at Kakogawa City. Food preference for pak-choi or cabbage and pak-choi or radish of the larvae which developed in the pakchoi field were compared with those of the larvae which developed in the cabbage field and in the radish field respectively. The results obtained is summarized as follows: 1.The larvae which developed in the cabbage field decidedly prefer cabbage leaves to pak-choi leaves, but larvae which grew in the pak-choi field show no preference between these two (Table I). 2.The larvae which developed in the pak-chi field show no preference between radish and pak-choi leaves (Tables II, III.) However, the tendency of preference of a larvae which developed in the radish field between radish and pak-choi leaves is not stable; namely, the larvae from certain location did not show any preference behavior (Table II), whereas those from other localities show a clear preference of radish leaves (Table III). 3.These results seem to suggest some factors inducing the behavior of preference; the extent of cultivation of the host plants in space and time is surely concerned, but other factors such af differences in various chemical stimulants produced by the plants and so on will also be partaken in.
