Mating activities of the squid, Ommastrephes sloani pacificus Steenstrup, were observed using speciments obtained from a set net off the Oki Islands, under experimental conditions in January 1957, December 1959 and January 1960 (Table 1 and Fig.1). In order to facilitate the observation, a number of the squid were removed from the set net and some of them were marked individually: every female with a tag having a different color and shape, every male with different numbers of hooks. Then they were released in a small net which measure 2m. in diameter, 3m. in depth, ha 10cm. meshes and the botton covered with a mosquito net. At the copulating time, surface temperature was in the range from13° to 18℃, and cholorinity 18.83‰. Anatomical measuremnts of some specimens whose mating were observed are presented in Table 2. At about the time of sunrise they satred toswim about with an apparent excitement until the copulation took place and continued for the spell of a few seconds (Table 1 and Fig.2A-F). From Table 3 showing evidences for copulation, it is clear that the empty cases of the spermatophores (outer tunic) were left in the stomach of the female. From the observations it will be assumed that the squid carrys out the mating in such a process that sperm-bulbs are discharged after the case of the spermatophores (outer tunic) havebeen got into the mouth of the female.
