In succession to the previous observation, larval structure at Rhynchoteuthis stage of the squid, Ommastrephes sloani pacificus Steenstrup, was observed in 176 larvae which chould be kept alive in glass jars for the periods from about 32 to 54 hours. of the materials use, 170 individuals had hatched out in glassjars in May and June 1959, while the others did in barrels on the bottom of Urago Bay, Oki Islands, in May 1959 (Hamabe, Reports I-III). Water temperature in the aquaria ranged from 15 to 18℃. At rhynchoteuthis stage of a specimen measuring about 1mm. in mantle length, the tentacle base begins to fuse, extend, and form a stalked rostrum (Russel). The rostrum gradually develops and becomes apparently strong (Figs.A-D_1). Another characteristic of the rhynchoteuthis larva is the delayed development of both the third and the fourth arms which remain at the beginning of the stage in such a state as they were in the embryo. In a day ortwo after hatching, however, the third arm develops longer and seemingly stronger than the first and the second arms which have become prominent earlier. Then, the base of the fourth arm emerges almost in touch with the tentacle base between the eyes. Just after hatching, the larvae were not capable of swimming free off the bottom of the aquaria. Instead, they crawled circlingly along the bottom.No larvae under the experiments were observed floating or swimming. At a stimulus the larvae was seen to contract and withdraw its head and arms into the mantle to take a globular form (Fig.A4-1).
