Ovarian fragments of female spinous loaches, which were previously injected with 2 frog pituitaries, were immersed in potassium fluoride solution. This solution was a mixture of M/200 potassium fluoride and calcium-free Ringer's soltion. The pH was adjusted to 7.5. As the control, similar ovarian fragments were immersed in Ringer's solution, whose pH was adjusted to 9.0 and 7.5. In ovarian fragments taken out of spinous loaches 2 hours after the injection, ovulation did not occur both in the potassium fluoride solution and in the two kinds of Ringer's solution. However, in fragments obtained 3 hours after the injection, the ovulation occurred both in the fluoride and in Ringer's solution, whose pH was adjusted to 9.0. The ovulation started 7-8.5 hours after the ovarian fragments were immersed. In the fragments, obtained 5 hours after the injection, the ovulation attained a maximum in the fluoride solution. In this case, the in vitro ovulation began to take place 6 hours after the immersion and all the ova were extruded within 2 hours. In contrast with this, when the ovarian fragments obtained 4 or 5 hours after the injection were kept in Riger's solution, whose pH was adjusted to 7.5, they extruded only a small number of eggs 9-10 hours after the immersion. The percentage of eggs extruded in this case was by far lower than in the potassium fluoride solution. Some of the eggs extruded in the fluoride solution were immediately transferred to normal Ringer's solution and artificially inseminated. They were able to develop normally into swimming larvae.
