It was found that the evoked potential of visual center of dark-adapted fish, Carassius auratus (L.), markedly differs from that of light-adapted fish which was previously reported. The redords in Fig. 1 represent three examples of evoked potential to white light flash of the right eye, led from the middle portion of surface of the left tectum opticum. The response latency of dark-adapted fish was slightly, about 15 msec., longer than in light-adapted state. The first surface positive wave (wave 1) following stimulation and the "first surface negative component" in dark-adapted fish are ordinarily smaller in amplitude than that of light-adapted fish. Comparison of responses of dark- and light-adapted fishes revealed immediately that the positive deflection with a latency of approximately 79 msec., corresponding to the wave 5, is pronounced in the former response and was immediately followed by the large sharp surface negative deflection in which the wave 6 and 7 are superposed. The most characteristic feature of the response in dark-adapted state is that the "second surface negative component" observed in light-adapted state never appears and the positive deflection, on the contrary, is recorded in that phase. The record E in Fig. 1 taken immediately after recording curve C, shows increasing of the amplitude of wave 1 and the shortening of latency, and the same latency as for the response of light-adapted state. It was found, as well as in light-adapted state, that the potential change of visual center varies with electrode position even on the same hemisphere of tectum opticum. The potential change evoked at one side of the tectum opticum contralateral to the illuminated eye is of opposite electrical sign relative to the other side, and the response from the middle portion of left tectum (point A in Fig. 1 .of previous report, '57) seemed to be constituted from the components of the response from both of outer and inner sides (point B and point C in Fig. 1 of previous report, '57) of the tectum opticum (Fig. 4).
