The potential change following the gross photic stimulation was recorded from the surface of tectum opticum of a fresh water fish, Carassius auratus (L.). The response to white light flash to the right eye, led from the middle portion of left tectum (point A in Fig. 1), was composed of complex multiple potential waves, each with long duration, beginning with a surface positive deflection having a latency of 40-50 msec. (Fig. 2). The on-response may consist of two constituent components, a series of rapid ripples with surface positive electric sign, occurring at 15-25 msec. intervals, and the long-lasting surface negetive components. Usually there appear 8 ripples and these wavelets are numbered as shown in Fig. 2. In light-adapted state, light flash induces two sequences of surface negative components, the first and the second negative component following the wave 1 and the wave 6 respectively. The off-response can hardly be observed in so as the present records are concerned. It was found that the potential change of visual center varies with electrode position even on the same hemisphere of tectum opticum. The responses from both of inner (point C in Fig. 1) and outer (Point B in Fig. 1) sides of the tectum opticum show the potential changes of opposite electric sign, probably excepting the riples, and the pattern of response from the middle portion of the tectum shows maximum amplitude and appears to be summation of the potential changes from both of inner and outer sides (Figs. 4 and 5). These facts may provide the physiological cues for central integration. The high resistance to the superficial application of procaine of the waves 1, 2 (and, also, perpaps wave 3), and the actions of strichnine to them obviously imply that these waves are different from other components in physiological properties.
