In and around Japan, it has been customary to think, the genus Zebrias is represented by the three species: Z. japonicus (Bleeker), Z. zebrinus (Temminck et Schlegel) and Z. fasciatus (Badilewsky). Z. japonicus of these differs greatly from the others in having a distinct caudal fin, and the different colours and size of the body and in its geographical distribution as well. The others, on the other hand, are so closely related to each other that it is by no means an easy task to draw a distinction between them. Consequently, Jordan and Metz(1913: 61) said that they are evidently geminate species. An attempt was made in this paper to verify their views making researches in the head length of the two kinds of fishes as well as their differnces such as the number of fin-rays, lateral line scales and vertebrae (Table 1). A research was made also on a specimen which seems to be a hybrid between those two species. It was found among Z. fasciatus caught at Sumoto City in the Island of Awaji located in the eastern part of the Inland Sea of Seto. This turned out intermediate in the number of vertebrae and lateral line acales, and its proportional head length, but not intermediate in other respects. It is close to Z. zebrinus in the number of dorsal fin rays, but regarding the number of anal fin rays it rather resembles the other.
