The mature larvae of Ephestia cautella were ligatured between the fourth and the fifth abdominal segments, and into each of the posterior parts thus obtained were inserted two prothoracic glands that were removed from the larvae of Bombyx mori on the second, the third or the fourth day of the third instar and from those on the first, the second, the third, the fourth or the fifth day of the fourth instar. The posterior parts without insertion of the glands served as controls. From the results of the experiments, it becomes evident that: (1) The metamorphosis-promoting hormone secreted from the Bombyx-prothoracic glands is species-non-specific. (2) The hormone secreted from the glands taken from the young larvae such as the third and the fourth instars is sufficient in quantity to induce metamorphosis in the isolated abdomen of Ephestia. (3) The function of the prothoracic gland in the fourth instar seems to become more active with the elapse of time and to reach the maximum on the fifth day after the previous moulting. (4) In some cases, the transplants appear to begin to release the hormone after recovering their good conditions in the tissues of the host.
