The strip preparation of the heart muscle of Meretrix lusoria was fixed at its middle part, and stimulated by direct current. Contractions of both sides of the strip were registered optically on the bromide paper, and simultaneously the stimulating current was recerded. After making the current, the muscle strip begins to contract during the stimulating current is still continued. On the contraction curve, the so-called response time was measured. The response time consists of two parts, i. e., utilization time and true latency of contraction. By regulating the strength of stimulating current, it becomes possible that the cathodic half of the muscle strip contracts only when the current is made, and the anodic half contracts only when the current is broken. The response time of cathodic region of the muscle strip was prolonged according to weakening or shortening of the strength or duration of stimulating current. The relations between the current strength and the response time was hyperbolic. Same results were obtained when the muscle strip contracted by anodic stimulation. The response time was reduced to certain minimal length when the strength and duration of the stimulating current proceeded above some definite values. Strong stimulation provoked the multiple responses.
