The formation and change of colour pattern, the change of habits and habitats, the development of the soldered teeth, etc. of Oplegnathus punctatus during growth are treated in this paper, compared with the corresponding stages of a nearly allied and concurrent species, O. fasciatus, the account of which was already reported by the present author. The characteristic spotted pattern of the present species is transformed from cross bands which temporarily appear in the early young stages (figs.1-3). These cross bands disintegrate into spots during growth (figs.4-6). The spots increase in number due partly to the subdivision of previous larger spots and partly to the formation of new spots in the space between existed ones. The form and situation of the temporary cross bands in the early stages of development correspond closely to those of O. fasciatus in which cross bands are permanently retained. The mode of development of the soldered teeth is similar to that in O. fasciatus, case of which has already been worked out by Hiyama (1934). The characteristic soldered teeth are composed of series of small conical teeth which become gradually soldered into a beaklike formation. This process of formation can clearly be seen in the growth stages. The young fish up to 40-50 mm in total length are usually found in accompany with floating algal fronds during the summer months. After that they enter into a life near the rocky bottom. They feed upon various zoo-plankton during pelagic young stages, and various larger animals such as crustaceans, worms, molluscs, echinoderms, small fishes, etc. after entering into the life near the sea-bottom. These habits and change of habitats are almost the same as those of O. fasciatus. An immature specimen, 85mm in total length, possessing an abnormal colour pattern apparently intermediate between that of O. punctatus and of O. fasciatus has been examined (fig.7). The morphological characters of this specimen proved it to belong to O. punctatus, differing only in its colour pattern from the normal one. This abnormal pattern has been found to be almost the same as the colour pattern of the normal early stages of development (compare fig.7 with figs.2-4). The present author considers this abnormality to be a case where the colour pattern of the normal early stage of development has been preserved.
