As for the recipient animals of the testicular transplantation, 34 ovariotomized females of Triturus pyrrhogaster were used. They lived from 302 to 444 days before being transplanted with testicular pieces. The operations were performed in January and in March of 1935. Before operating, the animals were anesthetised in 0.2% solution of chloretone. A small longitudinal slit was made on the right side of the posterior ventral surface of the body. Through this slit a small testicular piece from adult males of the same species, consisting mainly of spermatocytes, was fixed to the mesovarium which had connected the ovary with the body-wall and was left in place at the time of ovariotomy (26 cases), or to the cut-surface of the right oviduct at the level of the mesovarium (8 cases) with silk thread. No mortality occurred after the method of operation was performed. At autopsy after 194 to 461 days (at intervals of from October, 1935 to March, 1936), testicular transplants usually became well-vascularized and attained the normal or even larger than the normal size of a testis (fig.10, A and B). In sections, these grafts which enlarged the total bulk of tissue showed that there had been a retsitution of the internal organization and that the collecting ducts filled with spermatozoa had developed (fig.2). "Vasa efferentia" had been established outside the testis. They extended posteriorly as fine tubules filled with spermatozoa until they tapered off near the dorsal surface of the genital kidney (figs.3 and 4). the masculinization effects of these testicular grafts were secured decisively (see coloured plate). Grafts recovered from the mesovarian site result in a better percentage and in a greater degree of masculinization than those recovered from the site of the oviduct. The tail becomes wide and thin as in the male by the development of the dorsal and ventral fins, and the skin with male pattern and distinct nuptial coloration is smooth. The drastic changes occurring in the terminal region are very clearly demonstrated in fig.1. The parotoid glands behind the eyes on each side enlarge greatly and dorso-lateral and ventro-lateral ridges of dermal glands become distinct suggesting those in the male. A study of sections of the cloacal region showed the development of abdominal and cloacal glands and the cloacal papilla characteristic of the male (figs.8 and 9). The slight development of the hair-like appendages on each side of the posterior end of the vent could be seen from outside. Among the accessory sexual apparatus, the striking degeneration appears in the oviduct whereas the Wolffian duct undergoes enlargement. Assurance of real changes was secured by examination of sections. Fig.7 shows these ducts in the region of the lumbar kidney. It is interesting to compare this section with corresponding regions of normal ale (fig.5) and female (fig.6). Hypertrophy of the collecting tubules of the lumbar kidney was visible even on gross examination wen comparing them with those of a normal male. Among seven testes of the masculinized females, five contained testis-ova, though not to an equal degree. The testis of No.18 killed on February 4. 312 days after operation, held many testicular eggs inside the seminiferous tubules as shown in fig.11. the testicular eggs in the process of forming yolk were not found. In some tubules occurred a transitional form (fig.14, tr) which would represent a stage of an atypical oogenesis from the undifferentiated gonium up to the testicular egg. the author wishes to express his sincere thanks to Prof. T.UCHIDA for the use of his private library, as well as for his criticisms and suggestions in the course of the work.
