Stephanoscyphus, the peculiar colony-forming polypoid stage of the primitive peromedusa Nausithoe has been recorded from the Mediterranean. Its structure, however, had been only imperfectly known. The author studied a form of the same genus occurring in the littoral of the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory. The colony is covered with a chitinous periderm which undergoes triple or quadruple branching. The individual polyp has an essential structure of a scyphistoma, but is characterized by having many more taenioles than 4 and the sexual elements develop in the mesenteries. The elements, however, seem to degenerate completely without being discharged. The strobilation of a polydisc type has also been observed and described. Specimens of another form of the same genus was subsequently found from ca. 30 fathoms from the Japan Sea and also from ca. 50 fathoms in Sagami Bay. These specimens differ from the torm occurring in Seto in that the polyp has a set of conical processes at rather regular intervals on the internal wall of the theca, and also in that no recemose colony is formed. These specimens resemble more closely the forms previously described from the Mediterranean. A tentative classification of the genus into 4 species, S. mirabilis ALLMAN, S. fistularis (E.F.SCHUIZE), S. racemosus KOMAI and S. corniformis KOMAI, seems justified.
