Parazen n. g. The genus here established is allied to Zen (itea), but differs from the latter in the absence of bucklers on the belly, from the isthmus to the vent; in having no spine before the anal nor bony plates along the bases of the vertical fins, and also in having supraorbital ridges not serrated. (Type: Parazen pacificus n. sp.) Parazen pacificus n. sp. D. VIII, 29; A. 34; P. 15; V. 7; C. 4, 9, 4. Head 2.5 in length without caudal; depth 2.5; eye 3 in head; interorbital 5.5; snout 2.6; depth of caudal peduncle 4.1; second spine of dorsal (longest) 3.4; middle rays (longest) 4.6; middle rays of anal (longest) 3.9. Scales in lateral line to base of caudal about 85. Body rather elongated, highly compressed, deepest at the dorsal origin, covered with small ctenoid scales, dorsal and anal fins not scaly, caudal scaly at base. Head moderate, eye large, lateral, high up; interorbital convex across, its width equal to five-nineths the eye diameter. Mouth large, directed obliquely upward, upper jaw protractile. Teeth in jaws small, lateral part of upper jaw armed with three rows and anterior part of the same with two rows of teeth, inner ones pointed, midde and outer ones granulated, lacking at premaxillary symphysis, lower jaw armed with one row of pointed teeth, anterior part with two rows. Vomer toothed, palatines toothless. Pseudobranchiae well developed; gill membranes separate, free from the isthmus; branchiostegals 7 in number. Second dorsal and anal opposite each other, having minute bony protuberances along the base of the anal. Lateral line high, concurrent with back, ceasing at the caudal base. When fresh, color light reddish above, whitish beneath, with silvery reflections. All the fins light reddish except ventrals which are pale. These colors fade out after preserved in formalin, color of body becoming orange-yellowish, lateral line whitish. Edge of the membrane between first and fourth spines of the spinous dorsal blackish. Locality. Off Mimase, near Kochi, Prov. Tosa, Japan, more than 80 fathoms deep. Type specimen, 235mm in length, deposited at the Biological Laboratory, Kochi Koto-Gakko, Kochi, Japan.
