Recent advances in wireless technology have motivated activities for personal communications services sophistication. Wireless communication services include the outdoor cellular and the indoor local area network. While the speed of the present cellular is several 10Kbps, it is predicted that it will increase to 1Mbps for covering more services, and may reach 10Mbps in the case of co-integration with the indoor LAN. On the other hand, speed of the present LAN systems ranges from 10-25Mbps, but future services require 100-150Mbps, which in turn requires new radio frequency plans. In addition, as an extreme extension of these services, development of multi-mode PC cards applicable to different cellular systems, LANs, and satellite systems for facilitating a global location free access and realizing a personal mobility instead of the present terminal mobility would become a hot topic. As shown in Fig. 1, such an intelligent PC card would preferably integrate the antenna, RF/IF, baseband, and processing units on a minimum number of chips. In order to be portable and battery-operated, the card must be low voltage/ low power. In order to be multi-mode, it must be broadband. In order to be high speed, it must be wideband. And last but not least, it must be low cost. To satisfy these conditions, selection of the optimum device technology is crucial. Silicon technology with continuing progress for both bipolar and MOS devices could be an attractive candidate for multi-GHz RF frequencies.
