The PD organ lying across the propodite-dactylopodite joint of the cheliped of Procambarus clarkii was investigated. 1) Structure of the PD organ: It consists of the elastic strand, in which 4-7 large ovoid sensory cells (50-54μ in diameter) and up to 50 small spindle-like sensory cells (15-20μ in diameter) were found. It is supplied by a nerve bundle and accompanied by motor axons innervating the flexor of the propodite. Many sensory cells arranged in a line were observed at the distal part of the organ under the cuticular layer of the dactylopodite and their long axons ramify into the elastic strand. 2) When electrical shock was applied to the motor axons, three types of response were observed. In type A response, about 35-45 msec after afferent discharge, the efferent one was fired. The efferent impulses were fired in proportion to the number of afferent ones and the time delay of the impulses on the both nerves was 15 msec. The reflex discharges appeared on the efferent nerve 50-52 msec after application of a single shock. In type B response, the afferent discharges with a train of impulses at a constant interval of 8-9 msec were evoked for 30-300 msec by a single shock to the efferent nerve. The reflex discharges appeared on the efferent nerve 50.9 msec after stimulation. In type C response, the afferent response was similar to that in type B, but spontaneous efferent impulses at a interval of 54-84 msec were not changed by stimulation. 3) When repeated electrical shocks were applied to the PD nerve bundle, the efferent discharges (67/sec) appeared 1.2-23 sec after application and the response continued for 0.9-10 sec. The reflex mechanism may have a relation to the mono-synaptic connexion in the centre, it seems to be different from that of the mammalian muscle spindle.
