Changes in the fine structure of starved ciliate, Condylostoma sp., which occurred during inter-divisional or pre-divisional stages were traced under an electron microscope. During the starvation of ciliates in the inter-divisional stage, and while the arrangement of the nuclear nodes is changing, the Golgi apparatus and endoplasmic reticula increase in number in the endoplasm surrounding the nucleus, and many vacuoles containing electron dense spheroidal granules begin to appear in both the ecto-and endoplasm. The electron density of the chromatin granules in the macronucleus fades and at the same time the majority of the granules gather at the periphery of nucleus, only a few of them remaining in the central part of the macronucleus. Subse-quently, the shape of the chromatin granules become obscure. Cytoplasmic changes occurring during the starvation of ciliates in the pre-divisional stage resemble those in the inter-divisional stage, except with respect to the changes in chromatin granules of the two macronuclear masses which are formed only in this case by the occurrence of separate aggregation of nuclear nodes at the peristomal and trunk regions. At this time, the chromatin granules in these masses become slender, and increase in the number and temporarily show the chromonemata which are usually found in the normal divisional nucleus. These chromonemata, however, no more follow the ordinary changes associated with normal division and, starting from the region facing the peristome, the chromonemata begin to disappear. The nucleolus grows larger as soon as the organism enters the starvation period, and some nucleolae spread outward and frequently leaving an inner ring shaped space of reduced electron density.
