Seaspnal changes of population-size were studied comparatively in wild populations of Drosophila in two adjacent localities of Hokkaido: the University Botanical Garden in Sapporo and the Nopporo forest. Collections of flies were made during a period from May to October in 1962, using traps baited with fermenting banana. A total of 5830 flies, 25 species were collected in the two localities, of which 2827 flies representing 19 species were obtained in Sapporo, and 3003 flies representing 18 species were from Nopporo. Among them 13 species were obtained in both localities. In the Botanical Garden, Drosophila auraria race A, D. nigromaculata and D. brachynephros were predominant in occurrence, while in the Nopporo forest, D. lacertosa with a 65.4 per cent frequency was found to be dominant species. Seasonal activity of D. lacertosa was shown by a unimodal curve with a peak in autumn, in both localities. D. auraria race A was abundant in number in Sapporo, while race B was most frequent in Nopporo. Seasonal activity of the two races was shown by a unimodal type with a peak in summer. Drosophila lutea and D. immigrans, common species around human habitations, were captured abundantly in Sapporo, while only one specimen of D. lutea was collected in Nopporo. Seasonal fluctuation of total population-size was shown by a unimodal curve in Sapporo during a period from July to September. In Nopporo it was a unimodal curve but with a sharp peak in September. In the light of the above observations it is apparent that the difference in seasonal fluctuation of Drosophila in the two localities may be attributed to the difference of species in each population.
