Successive stages of the first meiotic division in living spermatocytes of the butterflies, Papilio machaon hippocrates and Nymphalis io geisha, were followed by phase microscopy according to the hanging-drop method of Makino and Nakahara (1955a). At metaphase, the 1st spermatocyte contained mitochondria in the form of thick layers, appeared as granular or fragmental filaments, surrounding the surface of the spindle body, with a particular thickenss around the equatorial plate. At the oncet of anaphase, mitochondria form bundles, and the cleavage-furrow appears across the middle part of the mitochondrial bundles stretching between two daughter nuclei. Centriole filaments from each centrosome were observed through the course of the first meiotic division without any morphological change. The time required for cell division was as follows : prophase 36+ 〜76+ (minutes) ; metaphase 14+ 〜66+ ; anaphase 5+ 〜33+ ; telophase 14+ 〜76+.
