The common goldfish, Carassius auratus, were irradiated with 1, 2, 4, or 8kr of X-rays and kept in water at 23℃. Three to 21 days after irradiation, the head kidneys of the fish were weighed and fixed in Bouin's fluid for histological examination. The head kidney was reduced in weight after whold body irradiation as shown in Table 1. Many hematopoietic cells were found in the head kidney of non-irradiated fish (Fig. 1 A), but their number was considerably decreased following irradiation with lethal doses (4 and 8kr) within 3 days (Fig. 1 C, D). Changes in the number of the hematopoietic cells in fish irradiated with 1 or 2kr are shown in Figure 2. It is evident from the results that the cell number decreased within 5 days after irradition with 1 or 2kr of X-rays but it recovered on the 21 days after irradiation if the irradiated dose wes 1kr. Irradiation of fishes with 1kr produced no marked changes in mortality at least during the following 21 days but in the 2kr group many fishes died by the 14th day. From these facts, it is likely that the cell number is highly correlated with radiation death. These findings seem to support the conclusion that the hematopoietic tissue is one of the critical organs in acute radiation death in teleost fish as has been shown in mammals.
