The chromosomes were studied in the mink (Mustela vison) with a hope to re-examine the data presented by ealier workers. The chromosome analysis was made in cells grown in tissue culture of the lung of a male mink, according to the water pretreatment-acetic dahlia-squash method. Chromosome counts made with 13 metaphase plates have shown that the somatic chromosome-number is 30 without exception. This number does not agree with the result reported by SHACKELFORD AND WIPF (1947) but is in fair accordance with those reported by LANDE (1957) and HUMPHREY AND SPENCER (1959). According to the length and shape, the 30 chromosomes were devided into Seven groups: no. 1, nos. 2-4, nos. 5-8, nos. 9-11, nos. 12-13, no. 14 and XY. No 1 is a pair of outstandingly large chromosomes with median centromere. Chromosomes of group nos. 2-4 are large in size and have median centromere. Nos. 5-8 are also represented by large-sized chromosomes. Among them the chromosomes no. 5 are subterminal, while the chromosomes no. 8 have median centromere and are very remarkable by having the secondary constriction on one arm of each chromosome. The remaining two pairs of chromosomes in this group are submedially inserted. Chromosomes of group nos. 9-11 are submedially or subterminally inserted. Chromosomes belonging to group nos. 12-13 are of small-size being provided with submedian or subterminal centromere. No. 14 is a pair of small-sized acrocentric chromosomes. X chromosome is characterized by a median or submedian centromere and its length corresponds to one of the autosomes belonging to group nos. 9-11. Y chromosomes the smallest in size, being furnished by a median centromere.
