During experiments of sisterbrother matings to make isogenic strains of the medaka, Oryzias latipes, a new mutant in the egg character was found in 1974. The mutant character appeared in the offspring of a wild type fish taken from the stock at Chiba University. The eggs laid by the female mutant are characterized by a peculiar oil globule fusion pattern after fertilization. Following fertilization, in eggs laid by normal fish, numerous oil globules evenly distributed underneath the protoplasmic layer gradually fuse with each other and migrate towards the vegetal pole. In the mutant eggs, however, small oil globules migrate towards the vegetal pole without fusing. As a consequence, there is a mass of small oil globules at the vegetal pole. The mass of small oil globules is still clearly visible in the vegetal pole region at 24 hours after fertilization at 25℃. On day 3 after fertilization (lens formation stage), a few oil droplets were observed at the caudal end of the embryos, the same as in normal embryos. It is evident by the reciprocal cross experiment and segregation of this mutant in F_2 that this mutant gene is recessive and autosomal. At present, more than 50 mutant genes are established in the medaka, but no mutant genes in the egg character have yet been reported. The author proposed the following genetic symbol: of, "oil globule fuse delay".
