The synthesis of fibroin mRNA in the posterior silk gland of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, decreases during the late 4th moulting stage. In larvae which had been allatectomized or ligated on their thorax within 5 hours after the 4th apolysis, no detectable increase was found in the synthesis of this mRNA. But the synthesis of total RNA increased in these operated larvae in comparison to the control larvae. The synthesis of fibroin mRNA was satisfactorily identified by the RNase T1 fingerprint analysis of RNA factionated by a Bio-Gel column. In allatectomized larvae, the amount of fibroin mRNA synthesized for 9 hours after the 4th ecdysis was 0.84% of the total labeled RNA. In the control larvae, this high level of the synthesis of fibroin mRNA was observed during the period of 11 to 24 hours after the 4th ecdysis.
