After examining 58 specimens of habu caught at Amami Oshima Island in 1974-1975, it was revealed that the number of ring structures on the vertebral centrum increased with the increase of the total body length, the distribution of the relative ring size on the centrum showed a regular cyclicity and the monthly distribution of an index of the marginal increment of the centrum showed only one clear peak in July. These results indicate that a ring is formed on the centrum once a year from June to August and the first ring of an individual is formed in the year afther birth. The age of the habu can thus be estimated by counting the ring structure (annual ring) on the centrum.
