Single neurone activity in response to light flashes of short duration was recorded from the tectum of crucian carp during the course of dark adaptation by a tungsten microelectrode. Remarkable changes in the impulse discharge pattern of the neurone occur as dark adaptation proceeds. In Light-object detector neurone, the flash elicits an 'on'-sustaining discharge (OD) followed by a silent period. After this silent period, the neurone begins to discharge again. This rebounding discharge (RD), which might last for several seconds, is an impulse train of comparatively high frequency and the silent period gradually shortens as dark adaptation proceeds. Finally the OD and RD combine to become a high frequency impulse discharge lasting for several seconds. On the other hand, Dark-object detector neurone shows usually a brief 'off' discharge and the rebounding discharge after a long silent period. As dark adaptation proceeds, the silent period found in this neurone is gradually prolonged in the opposite way to that of Light-object detector neurone. In the completely dark adapted state the silent period reaches up to more than 10 seconds. This phenomenon of this neurone is similar to that reported for the ganglion cell discharges of the frog.
