Single unit analysis was carried out in the optic tract and optic tectum of the crucian carp, using tungsten microelectrodes. 1)Light-object, 2)dark-object 3)darkness and 4)movement untis were found in the tectum, while only 1)light-object and 2)dark-object units in the tract. Light-object units possess the receptive field (RF) consisted of on-center with inhibitory surround area. Those units respond with a strong burst of activity when the small objects lighter than the background move into the center of the RF and also when the darker ones move out from the center. Dark-object units possess the RF of off-center with excitatory surround area, and are sensitive to the moving object in opposite relation to those of light-object units. Darkness units, newly found in the fish, possess the RF of off-area only. Movement units respond exclusively to the moving objects but not to the stationary stimuli. Those units are directionally sensitive and they respond to both lighter or darker objects moved across their RF in one direction and show an inhibition of response to movement in the opposite direction. The topographical arrangement of the RFs of the tectal units appeared to be roughly reflected over the tectal surface. The sizes of the centers of RFs of light-object units found in the tectum are generally smaller than those found in the tract.
