Changes in the action potential configuration and the diastolic phase during a period of intermittent stimulation after a cessation of repetitive stimulation and during repetitive stimulation after a rest period were studied in the bullfrog atrium without spontaneous activity. A certain period of rest after the cessation of repetitive stimulation (30/min) produced slight increases in the magnitude of the resting and action potentials, and a decrease in the total duration. Appearance of the after-hyperpolarization following the action potential was one of the characteristic features during period. This hyperpolarization was enhanced with the prolongation of the rest period, while repetitive stimulation depressed gradually this potential. The amplitude and duration of this potential at 180 sec rest were about 2.5mV and 10 sec respectively. Changes in membrane resistance during hyperpolarizing phase were similar to those of slow diastolic depolarization in the specialized tissue, i. e., it decreased at maximum diastolic potential and increased during subsequent slow depolarization.
