The occurence of microbodies has been confirmed in the liver and kidney of many vertebrates. In the invertebrates, the microbodies have been found in the protozoa, but are not yet reported in others. In the present work, microbodies were examined in hepatopancreas of some mollusca and crustacea ultrastructually and cytochemically (by diaminobenzidine (DAB) reaction). Microbody-like organelles could be observed in all the animals examined in the experiment except Pinna attenuata. Of these organelles, the positive reaction of DAB were obtained in Mactra chinensis, Soletellina-boeddinghausi, Tapes (Amygdata) philippinarum, Barbatia virescens, Theliostyla albicilla, Onchidium verruculatum, Leucosia longifrons, and Hemigrapsus sanguineus. At least, therefore, it was demonstrated that these species had the so-called microbodies in their hepatopancreas. Furthermore, the microbodies containing a nucleoid were observed by electron microscopy in Mactra chinensis, Solotellina boeddinghausi, Barbatia virescens, Penepatella stellaeformis, Aplysia (Varria) kurodai, Doryteuthis kensaki, and Eriocheir japonicus. The nucleoid of Aplysia (Varria) kurodai exhibited a crystalline pattern. It seems that the microbodies could be contained in all the organisms since its existence has been confirmed more recently even in plant cells.
