Hanaoka reported in 1960, when a piece of the testis of Cynopus pyrrhogaster is implanted into the ovarian cavity of the adult female, the undifferentiated germinal tissue at the terminal crest of each testicular lobe is transformed into female germinal tissue and the primordial germcells differentiated into auxocytes of various sizes. In the present experiment, a piece of mesonephros was implanted, together with the testis, into the ovarian cavity but the transformation of testicular tissue into female germinal tissue proceeded in the same manner as that of the testis implanted without the mesonephros; the implanted mesonephros rapidly degenerated into a mass of connective tissue fibres and gave no influence upon the feminization of testicular tissue. Injection of ovahormone (1, 3, 5, (10)-estratriene-3, 17 diol-3-monobenzoate. 0.2mg/ml hydrosuspension, Teikoku Hormone Mfg. Co. Ltd.) into the testis remarkably accelerated the development of seminal tubules in the terminal crest and at the same time, the male germ cell differentiation in the seminal tubules proceeded far ahead of the intact testis. No sign of feminization of the undifferentiated germinal tissue was detected in the terminal crest of infected testis. When the testis injected with the hormone was implanted into the ovarian cavity, the seminal tubules containing the germ cells at the advanced stages of spermatogenesis rapidly degenerated and a fairly large number of the primordial germ cells which were remained in the undifferentiated germinal tissue differentiated into small auxocytes. On the basis of these experimental results, discussion was made on the mechanism of feminization of the testicular tissue implanted into the ovarian cavity.
