The authors carried out cytological observations on the meiotic division and the cleavage following meiosis in order to make clear the time when the syngamy takes place and the time required to complete the division and the cleavage. Eggs of Chinese 108 variety of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L., kept at 25℃ during and after oviposition were used. The eggs were fixed in Carnoy's fluid for 24 hours at 5℃, sectioned at 5-6μ by the ordinary paraffin method. The sections were stained with Delafield's hematoxylin. In eggs immediately after oviposition, the nucleus was at the stage of the first meiotic division, being located in the anterior pole plasm close to the micropyle. The first division was completed by 40 minutes after oviposition. The second division soon followed the first and was completed with a formation of the second polar body at about 100 minutes after oviposition. The sperm nucleus in the egg increased in size with the lapse of time, and was as large as the female pronucleus by this time. The male and the female pronuclei came close with each other at about 120 minutes, and fused together at 140 minutes. The metaphase figure of the first cleavage was seen at about 160 minutes, and those of the second and the third cleavages were observed at 220 and 280 minutes, respectively. From the results mentioned above, it was concluded that the cycle of cleavage required approximately 60 minutes at 25℃. Synchronous division of nuclei was observed at the second and third cleavages.
