Recorganized macronuclei, which lie scattered in the cytoplasm of Urostyla grandis, fuse together into a single mass at the beginning of binary fission. Then the mass divides successively and the number of macronuclei increases. Thus a considerable number of macronuclei are found in each daughter cell at the end of fission. Throughout fission, the chromonemata found in the macronuclei are in the form of a network of thin threads (100-300mμ thick), which become thicker (500mμ thick) at the end of fission. Straightened chromonemata are only found in the constricted part of the nucleus during each nuclear division. Short tubular fibers, which appear in the matrix of the macronuclei just before fusion of the latter, become longer and more conspicuous in the course of repeated nuclear divisions, but later they become shorter again and finally disappear at the end of fission. The nucleoli found in the macronuclei have a large spherical form before the macronuclei fuse together into a single mass. However, they become small and increase in number in the fused macronucleus. Then they gradually increase in size and decrease in number during repeated nuclear divisions. The nuclear envelope maintains a typical double structure throughout. It is separated from the chromonemata in the fused macronucleus, but gradually comes in contact with the latter here and there in the progress of successive divisions of the macronuclei. The endoplasmic reticulum is found only on the outside of the nuclear envelope which is in contact with the chromonemata.
