The fine structure of the macronucleus in interphase of Urostyla grandis, which has many macronuclei, was studied by electron microscopy. The chromatin-material in the macronucleus forms a large, irregular network composed of threads of up to 500mμ in thickness. The fundamental components of these threads are pairs of fine fibrils, each 10mμ thick. The nucleoli are round bodies about 1-2μ in diameter. They appear to be composed partly of fine fibrils, about 10mμ thick, and partly of granular appearing material. The nuclear envelope is double, about 21mμ in thickness, and there are many discontinuities (50mμ in diameter), which may represent the pores. The reorganization band which traverses each macronucleus in the late interphase is divided into two zones: the front zone consists of pairs of parallel fibrils, each 10mμ think. The rear zone consists of small bodies or threads, both 70-100mμ in diameter, condisting of fine fibrils 10mμ thick. Reorganized chromatin-material appears as spiral threads 100-300mμ thick, and forms a smaller network as compared with that in the nuclear region shead of the band. Visible changes due to the reorganization band are not observed in the nucleoli.
