Reproduction of the Japanese skink (Eumeces latiscutatus) was studied within the city of Kyoto during the years 1974-77. Adult males begin to emerge from hibernation in early March, about a month and a half earlier than females. Skinks enter hibernation in October. Males become sexually mature in the second spring after birth, and females in the second or third spring. Females lay 6-15 eggs (X^^~=8.8) from late May to early June and they brood eggs in their nest. Offspring appear from mid-July to early August. The testes reach maximum size in the period between early March and early April, but final maturation is attained in mid-April with hypertrophy of the epididymides. Testes begin to regress in late May, reach a minimum size in June, commence recrudescence in July and continue to increase until September.
