Nomal movements in the alimentary canal of an Intact ubdivisual of the Oligochaeta, Branchiura sowerbyi consisted of: (1) Ascending waves of contractions of the esophagus starting from the anterior site of the intestine, (2) Descending waves of contractions of the esophagus generated at the posterior pharyx, (3) Ascending waves of contractions of the intestine originating at the posterior end of the intestine, (4) Defecation movements of the hind-intestine, (5) Irregular or weak movements of the posterior esophagus and fore-and mid-intestines under empty conditions. Tetrodotoxin did not affect the generation ofmmovements (2), (3) and (5), but suppressed both the feeding accompanied by movement (1) and movement (4). This suggests that movements (2), (3) and (5) are myogenic, while (1) and (4) are by reflex.
