Procedures for culturing chick embryos without a shell were described in detail and the biological significance of the development of shell-less embryos were discussed. 1) Two periods of higher mortality, at 8-12 days and from 15 days on, were recognized. AT 13-14 days, mortality was lowest. 2) In the control embryos, the growth rate fluctuated in a zig-zag pattern with a gradual decrease, but, in shell-less embryos, the growth rate was smooth and the decrease mote trapid. At 10 days, the growth rate of the shell-less embryo was the most divergent from the control, and that day corresponded with the first period of higher mortality. The significance of the egg shall in causing individual variations in morphology was pointed out and discussed. 3) Despite a delay in the development of the shell-less embryos, onset of yolk adsorption and accomplishment of skeletal bone systems for hatching took place at the same time as the control embryos. This indicates the existence of an unique time clock in the embryo, which acts independently of the progressive advancement of development. 4) Ossification accompanied by cartilage-regression took place even in the shell-less embryos, but in later stages, a crook in the hind limbs and "Klamphand" were observed.
