Scanning Electron Microscopic Observations on the Laryngeal Epithelium of Macaques

Using three species of macaques, M. fuscata fuscata, M. cyclopis and M. fascicularis, the laryngeal epithelium was studied by scanning electron microscope. The mucous epithelium that covers the inner cavity of the larynx was in each species comprised of the following three types: stratified squamous, pseudostratified ciliated and pseudostratified non-ciliated epithelium. Parts of the vestibulum laryngis, one-third of the dorsal plica vestibularis, and the plica vocalis were covered with stratified squamous epithelium. There were two types of microprojections, i.e., short knob-like microvilli and microplicae formed by a mergence with superficial cells of the stratified squamous epithelium of each part. Pseudostratified ciliated epithelium covered the basal part of the epiglottis, one-third of the ventral plica vestibularis, the ventriculus laryngis, the cavum infraglotticum, and the saccus laryngis. The superficial cells of this epithelium consisted of the stratified squamous epithelium cells (goblet cells, intermediate cells and brush cells combined together). Pseudostratified non-ciliated epithelium was located between the stratified squamous epithelium and the pseudostratified ciliated epithelium, with the superficial cells consisting of transitional cells along with knob-like microvilli growing thickly over the surface.
