The localization of concanavation A (Con A) binding sites in the common carp egg was examined using a peroxidase coupling method. Con A binding sites are localized in the cortical alveoli, but not in CA- and CB-granules. It appears that the cortical alveolus contents in the carp egg are different at the molecular level of sugar residues from CA- and CB-granule contents, and the use of Sepharose-coupled Con A for affinity chromatography may provide a rational approach to purification of the alveolus contents. Additional Con A binding sites are localized in the outermost (1st) layer and on the wall of tubular profiles of zona radiata of the vitelline envelope (VE), on the plasma membrance, sometimes in cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulun, in the 1st layer and the inner surface of the fertilization envelope (FE) and in pinocytotic vesicles.
