Seasonal changes in the gonadotropin (FSH and LH) activity of the pituitary gland in the adult male Japanese red-bellied newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster pyrrhogaster were examined. FSH and LH activity were measured by a testicular receptor assay and in vitro ovulation of Xenopus, respectively. Both of these pituitary gland activities showed a similar fluctuation. From autumn to spring, gonadotropin activity maintained relatively high levels and then decreased remarkably from April to June. However, the relatively high activity was observed in July and the lowest in August. In this paper, the relation between the testicular cycle and gonadotropin secretion was discussed.
