Performance Evaluation of Layer-2 Mesh Networks : Technical Challenge Clarification on Conventional IEEE802.11 Standard Technology

Recently, as home networks have become more popular, wireless LAN mesh networks have attracted considerable attention. However, existing technologies cannot provide sufficient performance. We suppose that Enhanced Distributed Channel Access based Medium Access Control, multi-channel allocation, and radio metric routing will be key technologies for improving mesh networks. In this paper, we introduce mesh network hardware simulators and measure the performance of a mesh network employing the above three key technologies. The experimental results show the significant impact of these key technologies and indicate their importance.
