A wireless mesh network is a promising system to form a ubiquitous network in which a wide variety of devices such as PC, a mobile handheld device, a consumer electronics (CE) device, and an access point can connect to each other. This mesh technology is applicable to many market areas including home, mobile, enterprise, and campus/public spaces. The mesh network has four key advantages compared to conventional centralized networks : higher bandwidth, spatial reuse, availability and self-configuration. Close interaction between the mesh technologies and radio resource managements is essential to utilize fully these advantages. In this paper, we propose a Layer-2 mesh network architecture in which lower-layer radio technologies and the mesh routing protocol are tightly integrated. This architecture also provides the flexibility to select the best configuration for each usage scenario while ensuring interoperability. We proposed a core part of this architecture to the IEEE802.11s ESS Mesh standardizing group as well.
