An Improved Method for ATM QoS Management

In this paper we propose an improved method for ATM QoS management. Both delay and cell-loss Qos management functions are taken into account in this paper. A delay QoS algorithm and corresponding architecture are proposed to perform a flexible, starvation free ATM delay QoS managing function. To meet the stringent timing constraint of the delay QoSs, both high speed sorter and subtractor are exploited to sort the priority value as well as to process the priority value. The subtractive policy is used to prevent the starvation and to assign the priority of each output queue. In addition, to prevent underflow of priority value and to process the empty queue situation, both renormalization circuit and empty flag are exploited to perform the normalization function. Simulation results show that the throughput of the enhanced architecture is more than 50M output requests per second (i.e. 21.2 G bps for ATM cells) by using 1.2μm CMOS process. For cell-loss QoS management, a global counter based algorithm and architecture is proposed to realize a real threshold scheme cell-loss QoS management. It provides more memory utilization than previous design. These proposed architectures are very cost-effective and have been verified on silicon as a switch controller chip used in a 8 x 8 shared-buffer ATM switch system.
