There is an ever-increasing demand for better performance and scalability in workflow systems. We describe how mobile agents can be used to satisfy such a requirement. For the purpose two important design issues are pointed out in workflow execution and architecture levels. Agent delegation models and a 3-layer architecture are suggested in mobile agent based workflow systems as a solution for each consideration. Workload is statically distributed over task performers based on the proposed method. As a result the performance and the scalability are improved. The effectiveness is shown through stochastic Petrinets simulation through comparison with client-server based- and another mobile agent-based workflow systems.
