Mobile communication services and computer networks are rapidly penetrating our daily lives. While mobile systems are mainly utilized for voice communications, computer communications are predominantly fixed network based. However, the synergy of these technologies in mobile computing is imminent, holding the promise of improving the quality of our lives and the efficiency of our activities. However, to bring forth this new era of mobile computing, a number of problems have to be solved. In order to support high speed, high quality multimedia traffic, various source-coding, channel coding, modulation, radio resource allocation and other physical-layer issues have to be addressed. Furthermore, a variety of protocol problems associated with each layer of the seven-layer architecture, such as mobility, handoff, authentication and multicast aspects have to be investigated. Lastly, hardware-related issues concerned with both the base-band functions and radio sections, including the size and power consumption of the portable must be studied. This special issue intends to be a catalyst to promote the collaboration among mobile communication researchers, computer network experts and hardware specialists. It contains four invited papers and ten regular papers covering, high speed transmission, protocols and hardware. We hope that this issue will stimulate the discussion among these communities, instigate extensive research activities and brings the mobile computing era a little step closer. The guest editors would like to thank Associate Professor H. Morikawa of Tokyo University for his assistance to set up the planning of this issue, and thanks are also to all authors for their valuable contributions and to the reviewers who volunteered their valuable time.
